Painting Garagrim Ironfist

With the advent of Slayer skills, characters in the army of Karak Kadrin are very deadly. Even deadlier is the special character Garagrim Ironfist. With three such skills (Lord choices can normally only take two) and a matching pair of special rune axes (with two runes on each!), not many characters in the Warhammer world will survive a challenge against Garagrim. Not only is he a monster in combat, he is an affordable 305 points and only uses up a single Lord choice. Garagrim is a fantastic addition to any Dwarf army!

Follow the detailed instructions and check out the stage-by-stage images for reference as you paint your models. Don't fret if the model doesn't come out picture-perfect in the end; painting takes time and practice to master. Just do the best you can each time and be open to learning new techniques from others. Before you know it, you'll be quite an accomplished painter with models you'll be proud to game with!

1 Prime the model with Chaos Black Spray Primer. Paint the base Scorched Brown. Optional Step: drybrush the entire model with Scorched Brown to bring out the highlights. As it is far easier to hide a bit of slopped Elf Flesh on a metallic paint coat than vice versa, work with the metallics first. Paint all the chains and weapon blades with Chainmail (or Boltgun Metal). Apply Shining Gold to the bracers, rings, brains, and decorations. Clean up any mistakes (metal on the hair or body) with Chaos Black or Scorched Brown. Finish the metals before moving on.
2 Apply a wash of 2:1 water to Black Ink on all the Chainmail and Shining Gold areas. After the wash dries, go over the high spots of the metals again with Chainmail and Shining Gold. Be sure to avoid filling in the crevices where the dark wash settled. Now for the details and metal edges. Paint the pieces of chain facing directly to the front and back with Mithril Silver. Apply Burnished Gold to the high edges of all the gold areas of the model. Before moving on to the next step, finish off the base with successive drybrushes of Bestial Brown, Snakebite Leather, and then Vomit Brown. Once the dirt is finished, paint the dead Chaos Warrior with Chaos Black.

3

Clean up any metallic slop with Chaos Black or Scorched Brown. Since Garagrim is not wearing any clothes, all that's left are flesh, hair, and the dead Chaos Warrior to paint. Apply Dark Flesh to all the exposed skin. Hit the hair with a few coats of watered-down Blazing Orange. Don't worry about getting the orange in the cracks – there's a dark wash in the next step.

4

Mix a batch of slightly watered-down Dwarf Flesh and apply a few coats to cover the skin. There is a lot of it because he is butt naked! These coats will take a long time, so remember to refresh your paint or it will get too thick and blotchy. Once the flesh is done, apply a watered-down wash of Chestnut Ink on all of the hair and the flesh. If you get it on the metal, just make sure to touch it up. Once the ink wash is dry, carefully apply Dwarf Flesh to the muscles, finger, toes, and other skin areas. Avoid getting the Dwarf Flesh in the gaps where the Chestnut Ink settled. Methodically apply Blazing Orange to the multiple strands of hair. Finally, apply Fiery Orange to the uppermost strands of hair and the tops of the braid knots.

5

Almost done! Apply the lighter Elf Flesh on the muscles, tendons, knuckles, and other prominent skin areas. Touch up the fingernails and toenails with Skull White. Carefully paint the tongue with Scab Red and the teeth with Skull White. Don't forget to touch up the tongue piercing with Mithril Silver. Carefully add a few coats of watered-down Skull White to the eyes before painting the iris Chaos Black (or your favorite eye colour). Speaking of Chaos, after cleaning up the Chaos Warrior's armour with Chaos Black, highlight all of the edges with Fortress Grey – use the same colour to paint the horn on the helmet. Highlight the horn and skull of the dead Chaos Warrior with Skull White. After painting the skin, some of Garagrim's jewelry will probably need to be retouched. Optional step: if you have any rough spots on the model from flash removal, you can paint them with Scab Red so they look like scars. Garagrim is one tough Dwarf, after all.
