Fifty-five
models do not seem like a lot, but remember, these guys never
run. You will never flee from combat after rolling poorly
on your break test, and you will never get chased down by
inferior Skeletons just because they outnumbered you. Sure,
this is a small force, but a good number of my Dwarfs will
be around at the end of the game... can you say the same about
your Empire troops?
Both the Troll Slayers and the Brotherhood of Grimnir have
the option of carrying either an additional hand weapon or
a great weapon. Since a Slayer's Strength characteristic increases
with an opponent's Toughness characteristic, the decision
on which weapon to choose should be based upon the opponent's
armour save. If the opponent has little to no armour, then go
with the additional hand weapon. If the opponents are armoured-up,
then the weaker attacks will suffer, and you are better off
with the great weapons.
What's
the plan? The larger units will try to hold enemy units long
enough for the smaller unit or a few Doomseekers to slam into
the side. If successful, this tactic will break most living
units and severely injure all of them. By including the Dragon
Slayer with the Brotherhood of Grimnir, this unit has a very
good chance of winning most combats on its own. The Rune of
Battle adds 1 to Combat Resolution, while the Beastslayer
skill doubles the Combat Resolution value of all Wounds inflicted
by Karl. Add a Doomseeker (up to 10 S5 hits each) to the mix,
and not many units will be sticking around.
If I am hopelessly outnumbered (usually by weaker troops),
I can use a Doomseeker or two to hold up the enemy units.
Doomseekers get to go first, even when charged, and are difficult
to kill. If they don't finish off everyone in base-to-base,
they still have Toughness 4 and 2 Wounds, and the enemy gets
-1 to hit them. These guys can hold entire units at bay for
the entire game!
