The dread Lord of the End Times, Archaon, has launched
a massive assault upon the Empire. He leads an army of the greatest
Chaos Champions and their warriors in an attack upon the city of
Middenheim. Archaon's goal is simple to defile the great
temple of Ulric and stand within the sacred flame, which would extinguish
it forever and hasten the end of the world. With him, other vile
creatures have arisen. The vile Skaven pour forth from their subterranean
warrens, while Orcs rampage across the devastated Empire. It is
a grim time indeed in the Old World.
If you've been following all of the Storm of Chaos
news that has appeared on the official web site (www.storm-of-chaos.com),
in White Dwarf, and in Black Gobbo, then you have
probably heard the term "battle site." A battle site is
a location on the Storm of Chaos map (a villages, a city,
or a castle) where players from all over the world battle to see
if the Defenders of Middenheim can stave off Archaon and
his Attacker allies. The results of these games are reported through
the web site, and the outcome of these battle sites is determined
online.
In
addition to the battle sites for which everyone on Earth can report
battles (we call these locations global battle sites), there are
a significant number of local battle sites that are tied to special
events occurring right here in the good old US-of-A. Local battle
sites do not collect results online and are thus decided solely
by the actions of players who attend the events.
Besides being a great excuse to get together and play
games, these special events will play a pivotal role in who wins
the Storm of Chaos campaign. Each local battle site is linked
to one or more global battle sites. Once the outcome of a special
event has been determined, players on the winning side will earn
a bonus (see What Is at Stake? below) for them and their
allies on all tabletop battles when they play at the related global
battle site.
|
For example, for the July 3-4 National Hobby
centre Event:
If the Defenders of Middenheim can win
nationwide in "The Herdstone Must Fall!!!" scenario,
their side will be rewarded in the nearby City of Ferlangen
battle site with a +1 to their Leadership in combat. Buoyed
by their victory, the forces of Good are more likely to hang
around.
If the Attackers of Middenheim should
win nationwide, then all forces of Evil armies that fight
at the nearby City of Ferlangen battle site will be able to
take one ambushing Beast Herd unit (see the Beasts of Chaos
Army book) worth up to 150 points for free or one free magic
item worth up to 50 points.
|
In the example above, it is important to note that the bonus derived
from the event only affects battles at the City of Ferlangen (until
it falls) and only affects gamers in the US. Other countries have
their own events that affect their games at specific battle sites.
In short, bonuses earned at US special events will only apply to
US gamers when fighting battles at the related global battle site.
While the global portion of the campaign is the same for everyone
worldwide, the local events will add some interesting twists to
the local gaming scene.
Lastly, if Ferlangen falls before the Herdstone event occurs, the
associated bonus will be moved so it affects a different battle site. Be sure to always check the web site before you play a battle
as there may be bonuses and penalties that you need to apply to
your games.
Note that the bonuses earned from these special events do not benefit
the Orc Marauder side. However, fear not, greenskins! You
can still throw your weight around at these events and affect the
outcome. For example, if an Orc army takes on a Defender army and
wins, the Defenders will register a loss. This loss will hinder
the Defenders' ability to win the special event, and thus lower
their chances of earning the bonus. The same applies to Orcs taking
on the Attackers. So, Orc players, consider your battles carefully
at these events your choice might be the deciding factor
in the campaign.
There are currently 19 Storm of Chaos special
events being run in the US. Some of these events (the ones below)
are national events, which means that they will take place in GW
Hobby centres, clubs, and independent retail stores all across the
land. Other events are being organized and run by each Region (Northeast,
Midwest, South, and West information available in 2 weeks).
More information (including the rest of the bonuses) on these events
will be available in the Events section of the Storm of Chaos
web site when it goes live June 1st. If you can't wait that
long, you can probably get a few more details from your local Games
Workshop Hobby centre.

What Is at Stake? If the Defenders of Middenheim

Ferlangen battle site with a +1 to their Leadership in combat.
Buoyed by their victory, the forces of Good are more likely
to hang around.
If the Attackers of Middenheim should
win nationwide, then all Attacker armies that fight at the
nearby City of Ferlangen battle site will be able to take
