EXAMPLE OF MANTLET HOUSE RULES

The chance to play around with rules and make up creations of their own is very appealing to some gamers. This modification is especially useful for campaigns, themed scenarios, or veteran gamers looking for extra detail. Obviously, anyone can use the examples below or modify them to fit their own needs and armies. However, before using house rules, you should ask your opponent's permission, and you should be prepared to use the straight rulebook rules in standardized leagues or tournaments.

Skaven Mantlet Rules

Rob Hawkins of the US Hobby Team has put together this mad invention for his maniacal Skaven Jezzail teams. Pushed forward by Slaves, this enormous contraption is the perfect firing platform for a unit of Skaven Jezzails.

SKAVEN FIRING PLATFORM – 50 pts
The firing platform may be purchased for a unit of between five and 10 Jezzails.  The platform's size will vary depending on the size of the Jezzail unit and may be deeper or wider to accommodate all of the models in the unit.  Regardless of size, the following rules apply:

Movement.  After deployment and before the 1st turn, the platform allows the unit to move 2D6" forward.  During the game, the firing platform may move forward at the rate of 5" and may not March.  Movement is straight forward, but the mantlet may Wheel like a unit of troops.  The Jezzails may still fire if the platform moves but will suffer a -1 penalty to each shot due to moving on the rickety platform.  The Platform is a Large Target, so the Jezzails may fire and be fired upon as long as the line-of-sight is over any models that are not also Large Targets.

Abandoning the Platform. The Jezzail unit may abandon the platform at any time and may then move like a unit of Skirmishers.  If the Jezzail unit flees for any reason, it will abandon the platform and flee normally.  Whenever the Jezzail unit leaves the platform, the Slaves pushing it will run off, and the firing platform will be lost.  Remove it as a casualty.

Shooting at the Platform. The platform is considered a Large Target, so all shots will have a +1 bonus to Hit.  When hit, randomise where each shot goes: 1-4 hits the platform, 5-6 hits a Jezzail.  The Platform is T6 and has 4 Wounds.  Template hits (including the bounce from cannonballs) will hit both the Jezzails and the platform if both are covered.  If the platform is destroyed, each model on board will take an S3 hit on a D6 with a roll of 5+ and there is no save allowed.

Steam-Driven Dwarfen Mantlet Rules

Although not completely perfected, a mad Dwarf engineer has invented steam-driven mantlets. Built out of plasticard and a few bitz from the old Flame Cannon, Jeremy Vetock made this formidable iron mantlet.

Rules. Each turn, the mantlets may move by themselves up to D3" (no Maneuvering, save for one Wheel). On a roll of a 1, the engine has lost steam and cannot move next turn. An entire unit with many separate steam-driven mantlets must move at the speed of its slowest mantlet. With this rule in mind, it is probably preferable to build one single mantlet that can cover the entire unit. Due to the resources required, the steam-driven Dwarfen invention costs 2 points per model (unlike regular mantlets' 1 point per model).

Since Dwarf Handgunners may move and shoot, it is possible for the unit to advance while under cover of the mantlets and still fire off their shots.
