Sometimes, it doesn't take
very much to get the old hobby fire burning. All
it took in the case of this Mad Inventions article
were several paragraphs in the new Warhammer
Armies:
Dwarfs book. That, and we saw a few words on
a Games Development brainstorm list about a comprehensive
rule set
for
making your own Dwarf inventions. As soon as we
read these items, thoughts of engineering masterpieces
began to fill our dreams. Even though the invention
"VDR" never became reality (probably because it
would
unbalance Warhammer for all time!), Ty and I decided
to create a few of our own inventions anyway
and
give them some nasty abilities for their use in
our games.
Rules, Shmules. On
the rules front, we should mention that
these
inventions are in no way official, sane, balanced,
or even useful. Obviously, none of this stuff
can
be used in any type of tournament games. This article
is not about well-developed rules (any point
values
mentioned are very rough estimates). It is
about inspiring you to embrace the hobby where
you can show
your love for Warhammer by making some cool and
terrifying conversions to use against your friends.
Of course,
every machine that you make will need to have some
rules so that you can actually play with them
to destroy your buddies,
but they are going to have to up to your imagination.
You might want to have a third party decide whether
your devices are too powerful, or you might just
not worry too much about the balance of the game.
Remember: mad inventions are all about having fun,
not about winning at all costs or playing
fair
games.
A Bit on Bitz. Before
we send you off to look at some of the amazing
devices
that we constructed (if we do say so ourselves)
and some of the crazed abilities that we came
up
with, I'd like to give a bit of advice on
making your own mad inventions. Make a plan! The
more detailed,
the better. Your plan can save you a pile
of money on bitz in the end. We went overboard
and ordered
more
bitz
than we needed; many just because they looked cool.
Also, start small with one or two devices. Get
those
inventions done and then go for more, if you still
have fire in your belly.
Now, on to the mad inventions! Just choose one
from the list below that sounds interesting.
