ARMIES

The colour section in Warhammer Armies: Bretonnia includes dozens of examples of heraldry that you can copy or modify for your models. However, most of the fields shown there are solid, halved, or quartered. Other heraldic arrangements are common, and some are shown below. Most of the arrangements have standard variations. For instance, a shield can have a “pale” (a single vertical stripe), can be divided “per pale” (two different coloured fields divided by a vertical line), or can have a series of small charges like stars or fleurs-de-lys composed “pale wise” (vertically arranged in the centre of the shield). Below, you can see a number of traditional arrangements with their variants.

You can download black-and-white line drawings of these images by clicking here. Test out different colour schemes by colouring these drawings with Citadel Colours or coloured pencils or markers.

By painting a charge or charges on top of these arrangements of fields, you can create effective heraldry for your models. If you want to use a unified colour scheme for your army, pick a few colours for all of your Bretonnian Knight models. By using the same colours in different heraldic patterns on all the models, you can create a variety of unique designs while maintaining a coherent colour scheme from model to model. Further complexity can be added by “impaling” the Knights’ heraldry, that is, displaying two or more different heraldries on each section of a divided shield, an arrangement particularly appropriate for Grail Knights and character models.

Of course, in the end, Warhammer takes place in a fantasy world, and any patterns and colour combinations you want are fair game. Experiment with different styles until you find the heraldry that suits you. Remember that the Bretonnians aren’t the only army that uses heraldry. Some of these guidelines might be interestingly applied to the shields of other armies like those of the Empire or perhaps Dogs of War or Dwarfs. So emblazon your shields, and we’ll see you on the tilting grounds!
