If you look closely at some of the images in Codex: Tau Empire, you'll notice a few awesome Tau scenery structures in the background. These buildings, also shown in White Dwarf, were built by Games Workshop's Design Studio to support the re-release of the Tau. We were able to pick the brains of the creators of this cool terrain, Mark Jones and Neil Hodgson. This article includes their responses to our questions along with a pile of pictures of the buildings that together form a Tau Communication Node. Hopefully their creations will inspire you to make some Tau terrain of your own. First, let's start with the primary builder for this project, Mark Jones.

What materials did you use to make all the Tau communication bits?
Mark Jones: Basically, pink insulation foam, polystyrene eggs, thin plasticard, dowel rods, and toothpicks.

How did you shape the terrain, and what tools did you use?
M: We cut out the basic shapes from pink insulation foam with a hot wire cutter. Then, we carefully shaped the edges with a knife and gently sanded them smooth. We used several coats of emulsion paint mixed with filler to give the foam a smooth surface. Then, we further sanded down each piece with fine grade sandpaper between coats of paint.

What about the antennae and bulbous bases?
M: The antennae were made in the same way as the bulk of the structures and secured in place with dowel rods or toothpicks. We cut polystyrene eggs in half and used them to finish the bases of the structures. They were treated with the same coats of paint/filler to match the structures.

How did you add the panel lines?
M: The panel lines were drawn on in pencil and then scored with a sculpting tool. We cut out extra panels and Sept markings from thin plastic card and glued them on with white (PVA) glue.

How did you paint everything once you finished?
M: We spray painted each piece with an basecoat of ivory-coloured paint. Later, we carefully picked out panels and high areas with Skull White. All weathering was accomplished using a special mix of grey/green chalk pastels as well as light washes of Citadel inks.
