A new entry in the Tau arsenal is the Piranha Light Skimmer.
Tau players who favour mobile warfare are already drooling over
these fast Skimmers, and everyone should give them a good look.
Though they are a bit more expensive that Space Marine Land Speeders,
Piranhas have better front armor and weaponry that can crank out
more shots and have a chance of Pinning. What's more, they have
access to a large portion of the Tau Vehicle Armoury, including
Decoy Launchers that will help them survive longer.
However, the real beauty of the Piranha is in its ability to
replace its Burst Canon with a Fusion Blaster for only 5 points.
You now have the same cost as a Land Speeder with a Multi-Melta
but still have most of the advantages listed above, while your
Fusion Blaster has the same punch as the Melta (with less range,
though).
The reason this new tank hunter is so valuable to a Tau army is
that enemy players have learned how deadly the Broadside Battlesuit
and Hammerheads are, and they will go to great lengths to hide
vehicles and walkers from the line-of-sight of both. In the past,
they could
get
away
with this because your Broadsides aren't very mobile and Hammerheads
can be cornered at times. However, now a group of Piranha's
with Fusion Blasters can chase down these
hard targets in hiding with a good chance of surviving the journey.
Or, even better, the mere threat of the zooming Piranhas can force
the enemy tanks out into the fire lanes of your Broadsides and
Hammerheads.
A secondary use for Piranhas is to carry a whole bunch of Gun
Drones across the table at great speed and with more accuracy than Deep
Striking them. With a team of 3-5 Piranhas, you can move 24"
and detach 6-10 "free" Gun Drones along an enemy flank to harass
them to no end. That makes a lot of sense with tank hunting Piranhas,
as the Gun Drone Pulse Carbines won't really help the Skimmers
that much against heavy tank armor anyway. Anti-infantry Piranhas
might want to hang on to their Drones, though.
