If a Kroot Deploys in a Forest, Does It Make a Sound? The Kroot provide a sorely needed close-combat element to the Tau army, though they are not the most durable creatures in the 40K universe. Still, they do fairly well in hand-to-hand fighting, with the same Weapons Skill and Strength as a Space Marine. Unfortunately, since Kroot are not allowed to use transport vehicles, their mobility is very limited. That means that the Deployment Phase is critical for Kroot. If you are playing with a static Tau army, you can deploy your Kroot amidst or just behind your Fire Warriors. From there, they can counter-charge assaulters just before they hit your line. The problem with this plan is that your Fire Warriors can't shoot into the combat, which also blocks their line-of-sight to other targets. There's another trick you can do with your Kroot in a static army like this, but we'll get to that in the second part of this article. One of the better uses for Kroot is when Infiltration is an option, especially into woods or jungles. Deploy them in the foliage like this, and they gain a Cover Save that rivals most Armor Saves and makes them more dangerous if assaulted. If the woods are large enough, you can place your Kroot 7" into the woods. Your Kroot can shoot out, but the enemy can't shoot in at you! Not only will this annoy your foe enough to lure him into the woods, but you can claim and hold valuable table territory in this manner. In fact, many Tau players would argue that this is the only way to use Kroot.
