THE TAU ART OF WAR - TAU TACTICS PART I: THE BASICS title image.

Death from Afar

In days of yore, you could plunk quite a few Seeker Missiles on any Tau vehicle. Now, you can only put two of these smart weapons on your vehicles. That is, unless you're talking about the Sky Ray Gunship. This new Heavy Support entry carries six Seeker Missiles. As Tau players know, the Seeker Missile makes up for the lack of Heavy Weapons mixed into Fire Warrior Teams like other armies have. In fact, they should be used in much the same way. Seeker Missiles are great at killing heavy infantry and vehicles.

Keep in mind that the Sky Ray makes the most sense in three instances. First, if you don't have any/many other vehicles in your Tau army but want a lot of Seeker Missiles, then the Sky Ray is the best way to go. Second, if you don't have enough Markerlights and want a vehicle that can fire its own Seeker Missiles in a pinch, then the Sky Ray's Networked Markerlights and Target Lock are your answer. Third, if you are worried about the survivability of your other vehicles as they fulfill their other roles (which could deprive you of attached Seeker Missiles), then the Sky Ray is a safer option with its tough armor. Otherwise, if you aren't worried about these three issues, then it probably makes the more sense to just attach six Seeker Missiles to three different vehicles in your army and save the points while spreading out your arsenal.

If you chose to take a sleek-looking Sky Ray (or more if you love the idea of a massive Seeker Missile barrage and have the spare points), equip it with the Smart Missile System as its secondary weapon, since the SMS doesn't require line-of-sight either. That way, when the going gets rough and you need to hide, you can move your Sky Ray behind cover and continue to bombard enemies with the help of a few Markerlights. Unless you can't spare the points or are somehow worried about infantry getting too close, the Burst Cannons make little sense on a Sky Ray and should probably be left at the Sept armoury.
