The Best Tank in the Empire

The Hammerhead Gunship is arguably the best tank in the 40K universe for the points cost. With a Railgun for its main weapon, a Hammerhead can punch through enemy vehicles like tissue paper, and it can use submunitions to blast large groups of light infantry. This versatility in killing tanks and infantry make the Railgun a popular main weapon. It's a good idea to use the Railgun with Smart Missile Systems as backup, since they can keep pounding infantry from afar while you use some cover between you and the bulk of the enemy as you line up your main gun on isolated targets.

However, the Ion Cannon option is great for taking out power armoured foes like Space Marines. It denies them their Armor Saves and has a high enough Strength to wound with almost every hit. Plus, the Ion Canon is great for taking out light vehicles with Armor Values of 10 or 11, though it's rarely used in this manner. If you pair an Ion Cannon with two Burst Canons, this Hammerhead becomes a lethal anti-infantry beast that cranks out 9 shots per turn.

Both of these main weapons have ranges that cover most of the table. No one is safe from your Hammerheads if they dare to move out in the open. Just remember that your enemy knows this fact, and they will launch every anti-vehicle weapon they have against your Hammerheads. Decoy Launchers and Disruption Pods are good ideas for keeping your best tanks in the game for a while. Speaking of them, you should also take a Multitracker so you can benefit from the protection of moving more than 6" while still being able to shoot.
