THE TAU ART OF WAR - TAU TACTICS PART I: THE BASICS title image.

You Better Hide

If you positively, absolutely have to take down an enemy vehicle, the XV88 Broadside Battlesuit is your most efficient option. Unfortunately, right after new 40K players learn that in the far future there is only war, the next thing they learn is that Broadsides are deadly. Chances are good that your XV88s will be among the first targets in the game. All of that fear is for good reason, of course, as the Broadside is very good at what it does and is fairly tough to kill.

If you can field enough other units for the enemy to worry about (Hammerheads), chances are good that your opponent will ignore your Broadsides for a turn or 2. Your chances of them ignoring you improves if you park your XV88s immediately behind Size 2 cover, as this will let you shoot while giving you a 4+ Cover Save on top of your 2+ Armor Save. His chances of killing your XV88s are low at this point, and there are models with higher points values making your enemy's life miserable that will draw more fire.

Getting your enemy to ignore your Broadsides is good, as they can fall victim to Instant Death! unlike vehicles. That is a real danger when the vehicles you target with your XV88s start shooting back. If you can get your opponent in this situation, though, your Broadsides can really earn their points — especially in conjunction with Markerlights (noticing a theme here?).

The other big advantage of Broadsides is that you can field a much larger number of them than many other Heavy Support options in the Tau army. What's more, the new Advanced Stabilization System upgrade means the Broadsides can get the benefits of the Slow and Purposeful universal special rule. That makes it harder to hide from a Broadside's guns for very long, gives you some protection while manoeuvring, and opens the possibility for XV88s to play more of a role in taking table areas.

The problem with Broadsides is that they are relatively slow with no jet packs. However, if enemy infantry start closing on your position, don't forget to use your Smart Missile System to pummel them until help can arrive. Also don't forget that you can use your XV88s to vaporize high-priority characters with high Toughness or Armor Saves whose death will greatly affect the enemy's plans (consider taking Plasma Rifles, too, if you expect to use your XV88s in this role).
