| Hand-to-Hand
and Tactical Scouts can perform this raiding tactic
by attacking through or around a piece of terrain.
The Scouts use their ability to move through cover,
and then they strike. If they have not been locked
into hand-to-hand combat, the Scouts move away through
the terrain which places the terrain between the
enemy and the Scouts to cover their retreat while
other Space Marine forces keep up the harassment
(Land Speeders are ideal for such operations). The
hit and run tactic can be more useful in a scenario
that requires mobility or one in which objectives
and table quarters are important. In such a scenario,
hit and run can not only harass and confuse your
opponent, it can also deny him the opportunity to
claim or contest the terrain around which you are
fighting. During Cityfight games or battles in an
urban environment, hit and run can lead to some
exceptional results! |

Its not hard to forget that Scouts are the
cheapest Space Marine Troop choice available.
Least
expensive does not always mean expendable, however.
It would be a shame to see brave Space Marine
Scouts
hung out to dry! Still, you can take more risks
with Scouts than other, more expensive units.
One
good example of a riskier manoeuvre is the "Bait
and Switch," where you send a unit of Hand-to-Hand
Scouts towards the enemy at top speed to present
your opponent with a tempting target. When the
Hand-to-Hand Scouts get stuck in (and they usually
will!), the
Veteran Sergeant calmly waits for reinforcements
to arrive, courtesy of his Teleport Homer. Once
the Scouts are in combat, your opponent has taken
the bait your squad of Terminators can
arrive via Deep Strike right next to
the Scouts. Not only will the Terminators' arrival
improve the
chances of your Scouts surviving, but the sudden
appearance of these armoured death-dealers will
certainly
cause your opponent much distress. |

Sadly,
the noble Scouts make for tempting cannon
fodder
due to their relatively low points cost. Though
it is unwise to use this manoeuvre every time,
it might make sense to use Scouts in this manner
when facing an army with a strong character.
You
can use the Scouts to draw him out into the open
so you can use your firepower to take him
out
at range (obviously, after the Scouts die or
flee). However, a Daemon Prince, Khorne Chaos
Lord, or
Ork Warboss can make short work of your Scouts,
so use this manoeuvre with caution.
Lastly, if you are a cold, heartless general
(Inquisitor Lords come to mind), you can use your
Scouts as a meat shield. Simply line them up in
front of your more expensive Troops and use the
Scouts to soak up damage as the group crosses
the battlefield. Hey, if the Scouts survive this
tactic, they deserve to become Space Marines!
