As mentioned before, Space Marine Scouts are
extremely versatile. Below are a few ways that this versatility
can be used to your advantage by focusing the Scouts
talents towards one particular battlefield role.

Scouts that are intended to fight the enemy up-close-and-personal
fit into the "Hand-to-Hand" category. Hand-to-Hand
Scouts are armed with the bolt pistol and close-combat weapon
and typically include a Veteran
Sergeant with a power weapon or powerfist. Hand-to-Hand
Scouts take advantage of their ability to Infiltrate
to get closer to the enemy battle line at the start. They
also use their ability to move through Difficult Terrain to
achieve a charge that would otherwise be unlikely. Scouts
can also use Difficult Terrain as a shield as they move into
a position to charge through the cover. Because Space Marine
Scouts fight in close combat just as well as other Space Marines,
Scouts do well in the Assault Phase against most enemies.
Also, though their carapace armour lacks the hardiness of power
armour, Scouts don't have to worry about that against Orks
and Tyranids. Since those armies already have weapons (Choppas
and Rending Claws) that rip through armour, the Scouts are
in the same boat as normal Space Marines without committing
points to power armour. However, regardless of the opponent,
it is unwise to leave Hand-to-Hand Scouts in protracted assaults
without backup (unless the Scouts are beating up on real softies).

Scouts with bolters can be considered "Tactical"
Scouts, able to perform nearly all the same roles as a Space
Marine Tactical Squad. Like their power-armoured brethren,
Scouts can take a single heavy weapon (often an autocannon
or missile launcher in this role), and they can pick up
a
single sniper rifle to mimic the function of a Tactical Squads
special weapon. The advantage of Tactical Scouts is that
you
can field the equivalent of a Tactical Squad for fewer points
with some additional advantages (Infiltration and
the ability to move through terrain quickly).

Scouts armed with a heavy weapon and sniper rifles
fall into the "Fire Support" category. Fire Support
Scouts are primarily focused towards antipersonnel fire, so
the heavy bolter is the heavy weapon of choice for this role,
as it matches the sniper rifles range perfectly and
can add even more punch to the snipers fire on an enemy
unit. Fire Support Scouts excel at dealing with enemy infantry
units, and they have a reasonable chance of taking down big,
tough enemies such as Wraithlords or even the mighty Ctan.
