SPECIALIST
MODELING TOOLS
The tools described on this page will
come in useful for more complex modeling projects. If the project
you have chosen does direct you to use one of these tools, you may
be able to make do with another tool – it's just that these
specialist tools make the job a lot easier.
HOT GLUE GUN
A
hot glue gun is a useful tool for applying adhesive to large or
difficult areas. The gun works by heating solid glue sticks until
they melt. On application, the glue solidifies, holding the materials
together securely.
MODELING VICE
A
small modeling vice or woodworking clamps are useful for holding
materials while they are being sawn. You can also use for them holding
things together while they dry. Vices and clamps can be bought from
hardware stores or DIY supercentres.
PIN VICE
Also
known as a twist drill (because that's what it does!).
This invaluable tool allows you to drill holes in just about any
material, including card, wood and metal. Drill bits come in different
widths, allowing you to drill whatever size holes you want.
SCULPTING TOOL
This item is a useful tool to have if you are doing any sculpting
or conversion work. The tool has one end which is rounded and is
good for general filling work and a knife edge on the other end
which can be used for finishing and fine detail work.
TWEEZERS
You
can buy tweezers from a chemist or a supermarket, but modeling tweezers,
with their long curved ends, are much better for modeling work.
Tweezers allow you to hold small items securely while placing and
gluing them and are also handy for holding, moving, and positioning
transfers.
MODELING SAW
Modeling saws can be used for cutting pieces of wood for scenery
projects. If you want to convert metal models, they're handy for
sawing through metal sections to separate limbs, heads, hands, and
so forth.
