USING SAND

TEXTURING BASES & FLAT SURFACES WITH SAND

Covering a surface with sand gives it a lovely rough texture that responds well to drybrushing and washing. For bases, simply paint the base with PVA, dip it in sand, then shake the excess off. When the glue is dry and the sand solid, paint the base. When you're dealing with models that are too large or too awkwardly-shaped to dip, paint them with PVA, then scatter sand over the top. When the glue is dry, gently shake the model upside down to get rid of any loose sand.

MAKING A TEXTURED PASTE FOR MODELING

Mix sand with PVA glue to make a thick textured paste that can be used for a variety of modeling purposes. Spread the paste over built-up cardboard, polystyrene, or cork tile to create a smooth surface for gently sloping hills. You can also use it as filler for building up the banks of river sections and craters. Mix small stones, gravel, or pebbles into the paste to create a rubble texture to go around the edges of
ruined buildings.
