Necron pyramids can by found on Tomb Worlds and across thousands
of worlds. They are dark and sinister structures, monuments to times
long past. I've always wanted to build a Necron pyramid, the main
reason being, it would be a great addition to any battlefield as
an objective to fight over.
Well, now I was given the opportunity. First I checked out the
Necron illustrations found in the Codex. The great pyramids are
only hinted at and seem lost in the distance. I knew building something
on that scale would be a Warhammer 40,000 battlefield in itself.
So I aimed for a smaller structure, perhaps a Necron outpost like
the ones that are scattered across the galaxy.

To begin with, I sat down for about five minutes and made a quick
sketch (right) to help me visualize the pyramid I was about to build.
What I wanted was a piece of terrain that miniatures could fight
around and over, not just something that would foil attempts at
establishing line of sight to the enemy.
I opted for a stepped pyramid based loosely on the Lizardmen ruined
pyramid I had built a few years ago. So, armed with my rough plan
I started to build my Necron pyramid.

The first thing I did
was make a shell, which was really three different sized boxes made
out of foamcore and stuck on top of each other. My first thought was
to have the steps running in-line up the side, much like my Lizardman
pyramid. At this time I checked out the obelisk that Rick was creating,
and was inspired to add a large Necron symbol to my pyramid - much
like the one on the front of Rick's structure. I quickly decided that
the icon would be inscribed onto a huge slab stuck to the front of
my pyramid. |

To this end I split the
stairs in two, running up each side of the slab. On the third box
the stair meet again in the centre leading to the top of the structure.
At this point the entire pyramid was looking very, very rough. And
it was being held together by White or PVA glue, pins and had huge
gaps all over it! In my initial plan I was going to paint the entire
pyramid with texture paint. I felt this wouldn't quite be in character
of the Necrons, so I stopped for a few minutes to think. |

A quick flick through
the Necron Codex brought me my answer: I could glue panels onto my
pyramid - very much like the Necron Monolith vehicle. This would give
the structure a more alien look and cover up some of those huge gaps
that had appeared during the initial construction. I cut out various
shapes from Plasticard, (although thin cardboard would work as well),
and stuck them onto the side of the pyramid using white glue. |

While the panels were
drying in place, I went ahead and made my Necron icon slab. I transferred
the symbol onto the front of a thick piece of foamcore, as described
in Rick's excellent Obelisk
article. I then cut out the symbol using a sharp modeling knife and
blocked off the rough edges of the slab with plasticard. |
