Flyer Tactics for Warhammer 40,000
From the get go, you should know that Flyers are something
of an oddity in the world of Warhammer 40,000, and they are
not a core part of the game. Before now, you could only find
the optional rules for these models in Forge World's Imperial
Armour series of books. What's more, even to this day,
Flyers are not allowed in most Games Workshop tournaments
and other "official" events.
However, that changed when rules for Flyers were included
as a part of the Vehicle Design Rules in Chapter Approved
2004 (pp. 72-73). You still can't use them in most events,
you still need to clear it with your opponent for most pick-up
games, and you still have to either get your models shipped
from Forge World or scratch-build your own VDR creations,
but we couldn't resist taking a look at Flyers.
Why? Flyers are a lot of fun, and they really fit in with
the science fiction background of the game. After all, who
doesn't love planes, huh? Plus, what battle of the distant
future would be complete without aerial combat? We all know
from modern wars that air power is king – it's kind
of hard to imagine that wouldn't still be the case to some
degree in the 41st millennium.
The closest things to Flyers in the core rules of 40K are
Skimmers. Though they share a few similarities, their
rules
and tactics make them different birds on the tabletop. This
article is devoted strictly to those marvelous flying
machines, Flyers. So grab your gravsuit, ready your Flyer,
and taxi onto the launch pad – you're clear for
takeoff!
