 During
the Horus Heresy, fully half of the Space Marines renounced their
allegiance to the Emperor. This was no mere rebellion: the Traitor
Marines had fallen under the diabolic influence of the Gods of Chaos,
infernal warp-entities who gnaw at the edges of reality, hungry
for the ripe souls of humanity's billions. The Chaos gods promised
immortality and the power to indulge the Traitor Marines' deepest,
darkest desires. The Traitor Marines would be beyond punishment,
with the universe theirs for the taking.

The traitors were defeated, though, by an act of supreme sacrifice
on the part of the Emperor and the unwavering loyalty of their Space
Marine brothers. Defeated, the traitors were driven beyond the realms
of Man into the gaping wound in reality known as the Eye of Terror.
Now and forever, they had become Chaos Space Marines, despised and
feared as traitors and heretics throughout the galaxy. Worse still,
the path to immortality promised by the Chaos Gods led through a
hell of death, mutation, and madness. Daemonhood awaited them at
the end of the road, followed by an eternity as slaves to darkness.
Still, the Chaos Space Marines fight on, unrepentant of the choices
they have made. Taking strength from their black well of hatred
and bitterness, the Chaos Space Marines harness the capricious patronage
of the Chaos Gods and rage ceaselessly against the Imperium and
its Emperor. The Chaos Space Marines will wage war without end until
the Emperor is cast down and the Chaos Gods rule over a burning
galaxy.
