NAVIGATING THE EYE OF TERROR
by Edward Rusk, heretic-at-large, Frozen Wastes Sector

Edward Rusk

Edward Rusk started out playing Battlefleet Gothic in 1999 and moved on to Warhammer 40,000 and his Chaos Space Marines in 2000. He has now amassed an amazing 5,000 points of troops for his army and has been spotted at two Toronto Grand Tournaments with them. He also co-authored the Inferno! story Liberation Day.

Here Ed lets us in on the new Codex: Chaos Space Marines and what it means for existing Chaos generals - over to Ed...

Ed: So you’ve done it. You are sitting in your favourite spot curled up with the latest and greatest Codex to come out for 40K: the new and improved Codex: Chaos Space Marines. You cast an eye to your painted hordes and hungrily thumb the pages of the new Codex. What can I do with my old Chaos army? Will it work? What of the new Rules? New wargear? New skills? New units? Where to begin?

Well, I’ll tell you. As someone who has been playing with this new Codex in one form or another for almost a year now (yes, a year) I have a bit of a head-start on those just seeing this overwhelming tome for the first time. You cannot absorb all the changes at once, so we will take this step-by-step.

First thing, skip the Army list bit for the moment (hard to do, I know - especially the new Obliterators), and skip the glossy Hobby section, as tempting as the models are.

There is a much more fundamental issue that we have to address with all you old beardy Chaos Veterans of the last Codex. Flip to the section called ‘The Books of Chaos’. Appropriately enough, it is here we will begin our journey. Click on the links below to learn more about…

And Now… The Army List! Get your pencils (and erasers in some cases…) ready!

In this section I'm going to take a look at the individual elements that make up the new army list.

Translating a Chaos army to the new Codex

This section is of interest to all you guys with existing armies, as I show how I converted my Red Skulls Chaos Space Marines army from the original Codex army list to the latest. To begin with. there's the army list I took to the 2002 Toronto Grand Tournament. After that, I will show you what a 'straight' conversion to the new Codex would look like, then I will tweak things to make it more efficient under the new rules.
