A concept that is more prevalent than even the last
Codex is that Chaos Lords and the Marks they bear (or
don’t bear) shape the units in the army. Lords dedicated
to one Patron may not take units Marked by the opposite
Patron, as the Chaos gods hate each other as much as
they hate the Emperor. So it wouldn't do for a Khorne
Lord to take Slaanesh Daemonettes (no matter how 'interesting'
the models look).
Lords with a Mark of Undivided are not so choosy and
have the most freedom of choice in their unit selection
(unless playing a specific legion that has restrictions,
like Iron Warriors or Night Lords).
Also, the Mark your Lord has will dictate how Marked
units function within your army. The short rule of thumb
is this:
|
 |
If the Mark of the unit is different than the Mark of
your Lord, the unit is an Elites choice. If the Mark is the
same as the Lord then the unit occupies the same force organization
slot. This only applies to Troops choices.
The exception to this is the Mark of Undivided. You could
have an un-Marked Lord and Undivided units under him if you
so wish, with the Undivided units staying in their designated
Force Organisation slots (so Chaos Space Marines with Mark
of Undivided in the army of an unmarked Lord stay as Troops
and do not move to Elites).
An un-Marked Lord is perfectly acceptable as well, and could
represent an arch-mercenary or bounty hunter in power armour
with cool wargear gadgets... such as a jump-pack and a combi-flamer
(hmmm... better stop before LucasFilm™ lawyers come a-callin'...).
This character could be in it for the plunder and nothing
else.
The strength of the new Codex is that you as a player are
allowed almost unlimited opportunity to theme the army according
to your whims. Do you want a Lord and Retinue mounted on Daemonic
Steeds? You can do that and I think Warhammer Fantasy Chaos
Knights, Undead Black Knights or Cold Ones would work great
for this. Or, you could have a looming Daemon Prince with
an adorable pet Spawn at his side. Or a mystical Tzeentch
Wizards Coven complete with a raven familiar and thrall wizards.
Or, or, or.... like I said, it is a very versatile list.
