Sanding Down the Whirlwind

To create the listing angle that makes your derelict vehicle appear to be sinking into the viscous muck of the swamp, you'll need to either locate a belt sander (that's what we used) or find some other means of cutting down your tank. You can use a large hack saw, but make sure you pad the table surface with an old blanket so that your tank isn't crushed or otherwise damaged.

Use the pen lines from the previous step to act as guides while you sand (or cut) the Whirlwind down. Keep a close eye on your finger placement to avoid sanding your fingertips along with the plastic model. Grip the tank tightly to keep the model from kicking out and away from the sander. At the same time, make sure you don't knock off any raised details with the palm of your hand.

Once you are happy with the angle of your tank, pull or cut any melted plastic free from the bottom and sides of the model and rinse the plastic dust off with running water. Set the model aside to dry.

As you can see from the photographs, we didn't quite sand down to the guide lines. We thought this new angle was much more interesting. You may discover the same thing as you work with the belt sander.
