Vehicle Construction Part 1 – Overview

The first thing you want to get started on is the Space Marine Whirlwind itself. As the tank (with its tree) forms the focal point of this scenery piece, you'll want to pour as much detail as you can into the crumbling vehicle. Assemble the vehicle as illustrated in the photographs below. Of course, feel free to follow or skip any of the steps mentioned in this article depending on the time and resources you have available

For a more detailed explanation of some of the converted areas of the vehicle (such as the turret, destroyed hatches, etc.), look over the detailed shots on this explanatory page.

Front
Rear

Add a dozer blade from the Imperial Guard Tank Accessory Sprue to the front of the Whirlwind. This extra piece gives the wreck a tree-clearing feel.

You can leave off the rear access ramp/door from the assembled tank. You'll put this door a short distance from the ruined vehicle on the finished piece of scenery.
Left Side

Right Side

Also leave off the left access door. Like the rear access ramp, the vehicle's death throws threw free this part of the tank, and it landed nearby.

As you can see in the photo above (as well as the rear and left-side shots), you can leave off the bottom portion of track. The tank will be submerged, so the tracks won't show.

Top
Sub-Assemblies

This shot shows the condition of the top hatches and cupola, as well as the gaping hole from the jettisoned turret.

All the Whirlwind sub-assemblies are shown above. You should leave them unassembled until you paint them.
