Time to paint a few Black Templar Neophytes! While
there are many ways to paint these essential troops, the following
is a straightforward method that achieves good results with a reasonably
small number of paints and not a lot of time spent.
Follow the detailed instructions below and check out
the stage-by-stage images for reference as you paint your model.
Don't fret if the model doesn't come out picture-perfect in the
end painting takes time and practice to master. Just do the
best you can each time and be open to learning new techniques from
others. Before you know it, you'll be quite an accomplished painter
with models you'll be proud to deploy in the 41st millennium.

Use Chaos Black spray primer to coat
the entire model, and go over any areas you missed with slightly
watered-down Chaos Black paint. Once the model dries, paint
the belts, pouches, grenades, ropes, and straps with Scorched
Brown. Apply Boltgun Metal to the weapons, buckles, buttons,
and other technological gear the Neophyte is carrying. Be careful
when painting the pouch buttons so you don't have to reapply
Scorched Brown to those areas. |

After adding a bit of water to your
Fortress Grey, carefully paint the chest emblem. If paint fills
the cracks between the feathers, just wait until it dries and
fill the gap with Chaos Black. Use a slightly more watered-down
Fortress Grey to paint the Neophyte's shoulder pads. To cover
up the Chaos Black beneath, you will need to apply a few smooth
coats. Highlight the raised areas of your weapons and other
metallic gear with Mithril Silver. Make sure you change your
brush-cleaning water after you use metallic paints to avoid
metal flakes in other colours. |

Use Skull White to repeat the steps
above. Carefully apply white paint to the chest emblem. Take
your time so you don't have to make too many repairs. Use watered-down
Skull White to repeatedly coat the shoulder pads until they
are thoroughly covered. Last but not least, use Bestial Brown
to detail the high spots on your pouches, belts, and grenades.
Paint your Neophyte's hair the same colour. |

Time to focus on the head. Start
off by adding Tanned Flesh to the face, ears, and neck. While
it dries, use Snakebite Leather or another light brown paint
to streak the previously painted hair of the model to give the
appearance of strands of hair. Now, apply Dwarf Flesh to the
highest parts of the face. Finally, pick out a few elevated
areas to paint with a mixture of Dwarf Flesh and Bleached Bone. |

To highlight the edges of the Chaos
Black armour and clothing, you can either edge the high areas
with Codex Grey (for subtle effect), Fortress Grey (if you are
in a hurry), or one after the other (for a layered highlight).
Since the clothing and armour are supposed to be black, only
paint the highest edges that would look brighter with light
reflecting off of them. Base the model to match the rest of
your army (we used a series of browns) and you're almost ready
to play! Only the shoulder pads need the proper insignia. Carefully
cut out your transfer and use tweezers to soak it in water for
30 seconds. Use tweezers and a wet paintbrush to apply the transfer
to your model. |
