RETRIEVE THE CHAMPION - A BLACK TEMPLARS WARHAMMER 40,000 RESCUE MISSION title image

Picture of an Emperor's Champion miniature.

- OVERVIEW -

It is considered a bad omen for the Emperor's Champion to fall, and if he does so, it is the duty of his brethren to bear his body from the field of battle and reclaim the Armor of Faith and the Black Sword.

– p. 15, Codex: Black Templars

After challenging a leader of the enemy, the Emperor's Champion was overwhelmed by dishonourable swarm tactics used by a foe too fearful to face the Champion in lone combat. Now, his battered armoured shell lies in the midst of the enemy line, and they appear to be taking unholy interest in carting off his remains.

Why the Enemy Is After the Remains...
Chaos
Can you imagine a better trophy for a Chaos God?
Dark Eldar
It will cause the mon-keigh great pain to lose these items. Maybe we should slay another of their Champions?
Eldar
Humans cannot be trusted with powerful devices, especially ones that create such a large echo in the Warp.
Imperial Guard
Perhaps a traitorous Guard regiment wants a prize for their new masters. Or, perhaps zealous Guardsmen think they've just found evidence of the Black Templar's heretical blood lust.
Inquisition
Rescinding these sacred items will remind the Black Templars to heed the Inquisition.
Necrons
The Black Templars have poured much of their very essence into these items. The C'tan will feast well.
Orks
Oi, time to play keep away, 'Umies! Keep away! Keep away! Keep away!
Space Marines
The Black Templars have ignored the Codex Astartes for too long. Time to bring them in line.
Tau
Though crude, these items might yield discoveries in Earth Caste labs.

- ARMIES -

Select your armies (any point size) from the Standard Force Organization Chart at as described in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook. The Black Templars are the Attackers in this mission.

- MISSION SPECIAL RULES -

In addition to the mission-specific rules below, the following special rules from pp. 84-85 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook are in effect: Deep Strike, Infiltrate, Random Game Length, and Reserves.

Fallen Champion. The Emperor's Champion has fallen, and his armor and weaponry must be retrieved before a new Champion can be chosen. Thus, the Black Templars army may not field an Emperor's Champion during this mission, even if that army is over 750 points.

They will even temporarily induct elements of nearby Imperial forces (much like the Inquisition does) to achieve their goal. In this mission, Black Templars may take an additional Troop selection up to 100 points in total value from any Imperial Codex army (i.e., Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Inquisition). This unit may take on of its normal Transport options, but only if it can be worked into the 100-point unit limit. This additional unit does not take up a selection slot in the Black Templars army's force organization chart. However, this extra unit does count against the agreed-upon army point limit for the mission.

Move the Remains. An Independent Character model or a model that's part of a unit may move the remains of the Emperor's Champion in an effort to secure them for their side. If a model ends its Movement Phase in base contact with the remains (represented by a 40-mm round base), it has picked up what's left of the Champion. The model may move D6" while carrying the remains (due to the extra weight), and it must maintain coherency if part of a unit. If the model is wounded in any way or is locked in assault, it drops the remains. When it drops the remains, the attacking player gets to decide where to place the 40-mm marker in base contact with the model that drops it. The model may set down the remains at any time (this time, the controlling player gets to choose where to place the marker on the base), at which point any other model may pick them up as described above. The remains are so cumbersome that the model carrying them may not shoot or fight in close combat until it drops them.

Map of the mission set up.- SET UP -

1) Use a 4' x 6' table for this mission. The gray areas on the map to the left indicate the Deployment Zones.

2) After a smattering terrain has been placed in an agreeable fashion, place the 40-mm marker of the remains in the dead centre of the board. The Defender deploys first.

3) Both players roll a D6. The player with the highest result may elect to go first or second.

- MISSION OBJECTIVES -

The Black Templars and the Defenders are locked in a tug-of-war over the remains of the Emperor's Champion. If the Black Templars recover the remains and carry them off their deployment table edge, they achieve a crushing victory. If the Defenders carry the remains off the opposite table edge, they achieve a crushing victory. If the game ends before the remains are off the board, the side in possession of them at the end of the last turn earns a solid victory. The game is a draw if neither side has possession of the remains at the end of the game.

- GAME LENGTH -

The game lasts at least 14 turns. Alternately, play until one side is victorious.

- LINE OF RETREAT -

If any units are forced to fall back, they will do so towards their deployment table edge by the shortest route possible.
